Vehicle-to-Load: your EV as a generator

Many EVs can push power back out of the battery to run appliances, tools, or a campsite. It's genuinely useful and quietly one of the best reasons to own one. It is also the source of the most dangerous mistake in this whole subject.

V2L is not a home backup system. None of it. Not the Ioniq, not the Rivian, not even the 9.6 kW Lightning outlets. V2L gives you outlets you plug devices into — extension cords to a fridge, a space heater, a laptop. It is not designed to connect to your house wiring.

Back-feeding your home through a dryer outlet or a double-male "suicide cord" can kill a lineman working to restore your power, burn your house down, and destroy the vehicle's inverter. Whole-home backup from an EV is a real thing — it's called V2H, it needs specific hardware, and it is covered separately below. If your plan involves plugging a car into a wall outlet to power the house, stop and read the V2H section.

Why V2L is a big deal

A mid-size EV battery holds 60–100 kWh. For comparison, a large portable power station tops out around 2–3 kWh, and a typical home battery is 10–13 kWh. Your car is a battery bank an order of magnitude larger than anything you'd buy for backup — it just happens to have wheels.

During a multi-day outage, an EV with V2L can keep a fridge cold, a furnace fan running, and phones charged for days on a single charge, and you can drive it somewhere to recharge if needed. That's a genuinely better emergency story than most standby generators, with no fuel to store and no fumes.

The catch is always the same: those outlets are for devices. The moment you want to power the house through its own wiring, you've left V2L and entered V2H, and the rules change completely. Here's what that actually takes →
