V2L vs a generator
If your EV already has V2L, do you still need a generator? Sometimes yes. Here's the honest split, from a site that clearly likes generators.

Where V2L wins
- You already own it. No second purchase, nothing to store, nothing to maintain.
- Silent and clean. No fumes, no noise, runs inside the garage door or at a quiet campsite.
- Huge reservoir for light loads. A 77 kWh battery on a 400W essential load outlasts any tank you'd keep on hand.
- Camping. This is where V2L shines brightest — coffee, induction cooktop, lights, device charging, no generator to haul or listen to.
Where a generator wins
- You need to keep driving. Every kWh spent on the house is range you don't have. In a long outage where you also need mobility, a generator preserves the car for driving.
- Sustained high loads. A 1.9 kW V2L can't run a well pump or serious heat. A 7,800W generator can.
- You don't have a V2L vehicle. Most EVs on the road still don't, and Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y don't have V2L outlets at all.

The setup that beats either alone
If you have a V2L vehicle: use it for silent household backup and camping, and keep a modest inverter generator as the thing that recharges the car when an outage outlasts the battery. The car powers the house; the generator powers the car. Neither one back-feeds anything, and you're covered for outages measured in days rather than hours.
