V2H: real home backup from an EV
Powering your whole house from your car is real. It is also a completely different system from the V2L outlets, and confusing the two is how people get killed.
The line that matters
V2L outlets can never safely power your home's wiring. Not with an adapter, not with a special cord, not "just for the essentials." Whole-home backup requires V2H hardware: bidirectional capability on the vehicle's side and a transfer switch that isolates your house from the grid before the car energises anything.
That isolation is the entire point. Without it, your car back-feeds the utility lines and can electrocute a lineman working to restore power. The transfer switch is not an upsell. It is the device that makes the difference between backup power and a fatality.
Why you can't just plug the truck into a wall outlet
The dangerous fantasy goes: the Lightning has 240V outlets, my dryer is 240V, I'll make a cord. Here's what actually happens.
- You back-feed the grid. Power flows out of your house onto the utility lines, which crews assume are dead. This is the lineman-killer, and it's why the improvised version is nicknamed a "suicide cord."
- No overcurrent protection. A male-to-male cord bypasses your breakers. A fault has nothing to stop it.
- Exposed live pins. Whichever end you plug in second has live prongs in your hand.
- Backwards through the panel. Feeding a branch circuit sends power through your panel in reverse, past protection designed for the other direction.
People have died doing this with gas generators for decades. An EV's far larger battery doesn't make it safer — it makes it worse.
What real V2H actually requires
Every legitimate V2H setup has the same three parts, and a transfer switch is always one of them:

The real V2H systems, early 2026
Ford F-150 Lightning — Intelligent Backup Power
The longest-running real-world V2H, available since 2022. It pairs the truck with Ford's Charge Station Pro and a Home Integration System for up to around 9.6 kW of continuous whole-home backup, through a documented professional install — not a cord.
Tesla — Powershare
Tesla's home-backup system, launched with the Cybertruck and extended to certain newer Model 3 and Model Y builds. It requires the Tesla Universal Wall Connector and a Tesla Backup Switch, and integrates cleanly for owners already running a Powerwall.
GM — Energy PowerShift
GM's home-energy system for vehicles like the Silverado EV and Hummer EV, again through GM's own hardware and a professional install.
The honest bottom line
Real V2H is a professionally installed system costing thousands, with a transfer switch at its heart. V2L is a plug-and-go outlet that needs none of that. They are not two points on a spectrum — they are different things, and the safety gap between them is a human life. Use V2L for devices. Use a proper V2H system, installed by someone qualified, for the house. Never bridge the two with a cord.
