You ran out. Now what?

The good news is that an EV at zero is a solved problem. The bad news is that one common mistake turns a two-hour inconvenience into a five-figure repair.

Do not tow it with the drive wheels on the ground

This is the one thing that matters. An EV's motor is permanently coupled to the wheels — there's no neutral that disconnects it. Rolling the drive wheels spins the motor, which generates current into a pack that may be in no state to receive it. Flatbed only, or dollies under the driven axle. If a tow operator reaches for a hook and a tow bar, stop them.

What actually happens at 0%

You don't hit zero and die instantly. Vehicles hold a hidden reserve below the displayed zero — usually a few miles — then progressively reduce power, warn you, and finally stop. The pack itself keeps a further buffer it will not let you touch, because deep-discharging a lithium pack damages it.

The 12V system dies too, eventually. That's what strands you properly: no door handles on some vehicles, no hazard lights, no way to shift. Know where your car's manual door release and external 12V jump point are before you need them.

In order

  1. Get off the road safely. Coast further right than feels necessary; power steering and brake assist degrade as things shut down.
  2. Hazards on early, while there's still 12V to run them.
  3. Call roadside assistance and say the words "electric vehicle, flatbed required." Don't assume the dispatcher knows.
  4. Ask whether mobile charging is available. Increasingly common in metro areas, still rare rurally.
  5. If someone offers a 120V outlet nearby, take it. Level 1 gives 3—5 miles per hour, which is often all you need to reach a real charger.

Mobile charging: what's realistic

Roadside charging is real but modest. A service vehicle with a generator or battery pack typically adds enough range to reach the nearest charger — usually 10 to 30 miles — not a full charge. That's the correct goal. Nobody is fast-charging you on the shoulder.
